A lot of projects never even get off the ground, not because the idea was bad, but because just getting the environment set up already killed half the motivation. Buying a VPS, installing dependencies, configuring Nginx, setting up a database, fiddling with object storage permissions… by the time you’re finally ready to write code, the excitement is basically gone.

Most little tools I’ve built don’t even come close to using a tenth of that.

Workers shine for API endpoints, webhook handling, lightweight backend logic, cron jobs, or forwarding and processing requests to AI models. The feedback loop is incredibly short — write something, deploy, test immediately. It really matches that vibe-coding flow where you just want to iterate fast.

The main limitation is the per-request execution time cap, so it’s not ideal for long-running tasks or persistent connections. Those cases still need a VPS. But for the vast majority of small tools and AI prototypes, you’ll never hit that wall.


Frontend deployment: Cloudflare Pages

You can push static sites, React, Vue, Next.js — pretty much anything — straight to Cloudflare Pages. Connect your Git repo, push code, and it builds and deploys automatically. No manual uploads.

The free quota is plenty for personal blogs, landing pages, or small SaaS sites. Speeds are solid and the nodes are everywhere, so you don’t even need a separate CDN.

Compared with Vercel or Netlify, Pages wins when you’re already using other Cloudflare services. Everything — Workers, D1, R2 — lives in one place, which makes management way less painful than jumping between platforms.


Data layer: D1 and R2

For structured data, Cloudflare D1 is basically SQLite in the cloud — 5GB free storage on the free plan. That’s more than enough for early-stage projects, the SQL is standard, and migration cost is low. Workers can talk to D1 with almost zero extra setup.

For object storage, R2 gives you 10GB free. The killer feature is that there’s no egress fee when accessing it from inside the Cloudflare ecosystem. Whether you’re storing images, audio, user uploads, or AI-generated files, you don’t have to worry about surprise traffic bills — a huge difference from AWS S3 pricing.

Both D1 and R2 integrate natively with Workers, so no extra permission headaches or heavy SDK initialization. The code stays clean and short.


What kind of projects this architecture fits

This stack is perfect when you want to validate an idea fast, your initial usage is small, and you don’t want to waste time on infrastructure. AI tool prototypes, side projects, internal automation systems, product MVPs — they all share the same priority: get the logic working first, worry about architecture later.

The example above is a fully deployable AI API proxy. Workers receives the request, forwards it to the model, and returns the result. You can add D1 for conversation history and R2 for uploaded files, and the whole thing still runs comfortably inside the free tier.


How it compares with self-hosted VPS

Running your own VPS gives you total control — you can install anything, run any service, no platform restrictions. For long-term production workloads, complex ops needs, or usage that outgrows the free tier, a VPS is still the better choice.

Cloudflare’s big advantage is near-zero ops overhead and basically free to start. The two aren’t replacements for each other — they’re for different stages. Use Cloudflare to validate the prototype quickly, then decide later whether to stay on their paid plans or move to VPS once you have real traction.


One practical suggestion

If you’re working on an AI tool or any small project right now, try building the first version with this stack. Let Workers handle the API logic, Pages host the frontend, D1 store the data, and R2 handle the files. The whole setup usually takes less than an afternoon, and then you can spend all your time on the actual product instead of infrastructure.

Getting something live always beats trying to make the architecture perfect from day one. Nobody is going to reject your product just because you used SQLite in the beginning. Fix the architecture once you actually have users — that’s the right order.
