โ ๏ธ Five traps before you check out
Each one comes from reading provider terms line by line โ not generic advice.
01First-term price is not the renewal price
The most common Black Friday misdirection is advertising a first-period discount as "X% off". Open the renewal terms before checkout, especially for annual plans that switch to monthly, or promos valid for only 12 months. A 50%+ jump is normal.
02Flash-plan specs change every year
The same provider's Black Friday plan rarely keeps identical specs year over year โ memory, disk and transfer have all shifted before (15GBโ20GB, 2TBโ3TB). Do not use last year's review numbers as this year's spec sheet.
03The cost of overselling and "unlimited" traffic
Cheap boxes are oversold by design: CPU steal and disk IO jitter during peak hours are the norm. "Unlimited" usually comes with a fair-use clause and throttling under sustained load. Watch real IO and latency for a week before moving a production site.
04Route-optimized plans rarely see deep cuts
CN2 GIA, CMIN2 and Softbank routing costs real money, so Black Friday typically brings "10โ20% off, recurring" at best. If you see a GIA plan at 70% off, check whether it is shared bandwidth or a non-native route.
05Stock and region restrictions
Some cheap tiers are released only in specific datacenters and cannot be migrated freely. Confirm the location matches your audience and whether you can upgrade the plan later โ otherwise you may end up buying a second server.
โ Black Friday FAQ
Are VPS prices really the lowest on Black Friday?
For some providers, yes โ not as a rule. The deepest cuts come from vendors whose model is annual low-cost flash plans (RackNerd is the usual example), where 30โ50% off is common. Providers with stable pricing (Hetzner, Vultr, DigitalOcean) usually offer only a small credit bonus or nothing at all. If you are after a route-optimized plan (CN2 GIA), Black Friday discounts are typically marginal โ waiting rarely pays off.
Should I buy on the day or earlier?
For flash plans, watch the day itself: stock is limited and some tiers only open during Black Friday week. For standard plans the difference is small, and buying earlier avoids checkout congestion and support backlogs. A practical approach: decide the exact plan and budget beforehand, then on the day only execute the purchase.
Can a $15/year VPS be used for a real website?
Yes, with caveats. These boxes are typically 1 core / 1GB, share CPU and are heavily oversold. They suit static sites, small WordPress installs, personal projects and proxies โ not e-commerce, database-heavy apps, or anything with a hard availability requirement. Judge by dedicated IPv4, CPU steal limits, SSD/NVMe storage and whether the provider offers usable backups, not by price alone.
Will the price go up on renewal?
Depends on the plan type. Plans marked "recurring discount" renew at the same rate; plans marked "first term" revert to list price, commonly a 50โ100% increase. Always confirm the renewal amount on the checkout page instead of reading only the first-period price.
What if the plan I want sells out?
Two options. First, wait for restock โ popular flash plans usually get one or two additional batches during Black Friday week and Cyber Monday, and watching the provider's announcement channel beats refreshing the page. Second, keep an equivalent alternative: prepare two candidates per "specs + route + budget" combination instead of fixating on one.
๐งญ Discounts are the last thing to check
Cheap only matters if it fits your workload. Size the requirement first, compare prices second, look at the discount last.
